The World Ovarian Cancer Coalition Atlas 2023 is a comprehensive literature review identifying the global trends in incidence, mortality, and survival of this disease which continues to have the highest mortality rate of all the female cancers. Whilst there have been an encouraging number of new studies on ovarian cancer in the years since the Coalition’s first edition of the Atlas, the need to make the disease a global priority is as urgent as ever.

Supporting the Global Priority goal, the 2020 World Ovarian Cancer Atlas was launched in October 2020. The incidence of ovarian cancer is set to rise by 47% by the year 2040, with the burden most felt by those in low- and middle-income countries. This comprehensive literature view examines this in detail and explains why making ovarian cancer a global priority is urgent.

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal of female cancers. Survival rates are low overall around the world. Incidence and mortality are on the rise everywhere, but with disproportionately higher rates in low- and middle-income countries. 

This briefing underscores the continued need for urgency in recognising ovarian cancer as a global health priority. The increasing burden and challenges of providing the best possible care and best chance of survival must be acknowledged at national, regional, and local levels.

In April 2022, the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition invited global experts including clinicians, policy experts, NGOs and ovarian cancer patient advocates from countries across the income spectrum to identify challenges and opportunities to improve access to essential medicines in ovarian cancer and to inform the Coalition on actions it could take to support members to advocate for better access and affordability of medicines locally. This report summarizes the findings from this Roundtable.

Summary Report

Guided by an international expert advisory panel, the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition undertook the Every Woman Study™ in 2018. The Study included the largest-ever global survey of women with the disease. The objective was simple: to address the evidence gap and identify a way forward to ensure the best chance of survival and the best quality of life for women with ovarian cancer.

Peer reviewed and published in the International Journal of Gynecologic Cancer, the Study included qualitative research with women in low- and middle-income countries and the 2018 World Ovarian Cancer Coalition Atlas – a literature review of incidence, mortality, survival, and trends around the world.

The Study showed what was already suspected – that there are major differences around the world in terms of best practices and local challenges in addressing ovarian cancer. No single region or country has all the answers, and all could benefit if best practices were shared and the variations were addressed.  The results highlighted a number of critical areas of focus that form the heart of the Global Ovarian Cancer Charter and the six Global Goals.

Global Priority Event Report

This report summarises the virtual meeting, ‘Making Ovarian Cancer a Global Priority’, which took place on 22nd October 2020 as part of the Global Ovarian Cancer Charter Summit Series. A recording of the meeting is available [here].

The purpose of the meeting was to highlight key challenges and opportunities for improving survival and quality of life for women with ovarian cancer and to explore in particular the gap between care for women in high resource settings compared to those living in low- and middle-resource settings.

Better Data Event Report

The purpose of the meeting was to highlight key challenges and opportunities for improving ovarian cancer data collection, with a view to improving cancer control and planning, and improving outcomes.
